GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Most of the historic buildings in downtown Grants Pass are not prepared to handle a major earthquake.

Monday afternoon, city officials discussed offering five, 50 thousand dollar grants for businesses to get up to fire and earthquake regulations.

City officials say most of the historic buildings downtown were built in the late 1800′s. Officials are hoping the 50 thousand dollars could give businesses the extra financial help to get up to code.

The Ausland Group is working with three businesses that will soon be taking up space on 8th street. Though the company can’t talk about specifics, it’s planning to apply for that grant. The CEO says he’s envisioning a style of an up-scale area of Portland when renovating it.

“You’re going to see a framework, much like what you see in Portland’s Pearl District buildings of structural rehabilitation that is celebrated inside of that industrial feeling of a building,” Aaron Ausland explained. “I know that’s a high threshold to be comparing it to the Portland Pearl District but that’s really what we’re going to have here when we’re done.

The City Council will make a decision to offer the grants to the historic district sometime in September.
